Fall Prevention

Falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults. Falls can be traumatic, both practically and emotionally. When such an incident happens, seek medical care as it could be a sign of changes in your mobility. Fall Prevention training is a holistic model of intervention involving three areas: balance training/adaptive exercise, medical management, and home modifications.

The Fall Prevention Center of Excellence is an innovative organization seeking to raise public awareness of the incidence of falls and the importance of fall prevention education. FPCE endorses an interesting model of intervention, FallProof. This program offers instruction on a variety of exercises specific to improving balance and mobility.

In the following essay, Deshae walks the reader through the challenges of a week in her life of living with Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy. Spirituality and coping are the core themes of her work. Her mission is to offer encouragement to those who struggle with the emotional stresses of complex health concerns.

Diabetes and Athletics

Athletic competitions are challenging under the best of circumstances. The Type 1 cycling team completed the Race Across America marathon in record time with a notable milestone. Each member of the Type 1 team skillfully negotiated the self management demands of their Type 1 diabetes during training and competition- a double victory.  An inspiring account of a remarkable athletic journey beyond the challenges of a medical condition.

The Vicious Stress Loop

The mind and body absorb stress like a sponge. The good news is that stress management can be learned. It may feel unnatural at first to take a moment to relax when feeling stressed. Learning how to manage your stress actively rather than re-actively can foster increased resilience.  Countering the “vicious stress loop” is worth the effort and the payoffs are usually immediate.

Is Exercise The Magic Bullet?

There are few disputes to the countless benefits of exercise, but for persons with chronic medical conditions standard exercise programs may not be the right solution. Organizations such as NCPAD provide excellent education on modified exercise programs. The take away guideline of this article is to engage in as much exercise as your body will tolerate. Keep searching for the right type of exercise for your body, there are many approaches out there.
